Tonight I went to hear Kevin Mileski play a show at Slice of Chicago in Palatine. The first time I saw his name on a poster was at Lamp Lighters. I recoginzed the name but couldn't place it at all until...tonight. I had even seen his CD in our management office many many times as Rob has been trying to get Mike to listen to him. Still, nothing. But, tonight it all clicked. Kevin Mileski was a guy that over 12 years ago was in Barrington High Schools accapella group. He was a long haired, even longer beared wonder to me back then and I was a smitten kitten in high school. I remember the day well. It was Cary-Grove's Annual Swing Choir Festival and the guys from BHS (yes, that's right, B with an H, H with an S, B.H.S!) got up to do a couple of men's numbers and he and I kept looking at one another! I was a sophomore and I believe he was a junior. Boy was he a cutey then and boy is he a cutey now! As I watched him play last night I had so many feelings rush through my soul. Here's just a quick peek-a-boo into some of those thoughts:
~Wow, it's been way too long since I've heard really great live music.
~I want to learn how to play the guitar.
~I wonder if I have the patience to learn to play the guitar?
~I LOVE music!
~His smile is so contagious. It was then, it is now.
~the amount of fun he looks like he's having makes me want to dance
~I love to dance!
~live music is no longer a thing to do, it's a must do often!
~baggy pants and birkenstocks
~Steve Miller Band (an unrelated high school memory)
~Summer time is the best time
~Peter Mulvey and my friend that has heard him play so many times in college bars and small venues
~Why did I ever stop singing?
Anywho, back to the story...so, the boys are doing this medley of fun oldies and Kevin comes down into the audience and sits on my lap and sings to me. Now, for those of you that know me, you know two things...
1). I love attention.
2). I love boys.
Put these two together and this is why you have the memory of such an event being posted on my blog. Cause honestly, there was no way to walk up to him last night and say, hi...I'm Kristen Driscoll and you sat on my lap once!
Oh Kevin...You were amazing. Thanks for the inspirational jolt...for the great sound and for your smile. It was a great evening! I loved the guitar and perc playing! I LOVED his scatting!
So, I guess, I am a new/old fan. And maybe one day, if I go to enough shows, Kevin will come off stage and sit on my lap again!?! Here's to hoping!
Here's a bit of free advertising...
His next show is Tuesday @ 8:30 @ Lamplighters Inn in Palatine... for anyone that wants to join me, I'll be there!
